Day of Art therapy in Europe 2024

What if … art could heal you?
Qualified Art Therapists can ensure it does!
Today Luxembourg’s Association of Qualified Art Therapists (ALAtD) celebrates the 3rd Day of Art Therapy in Europe. ALAtD emphasizes the importance of working with skilled professionals. With the growing recognition of art therapy’s benefits, it is crucial to seek out an art therapist who has the proper training and experience to guide individuals through their therapeutic journey.
A 2019 report by the World Health Organization (WHO) confirmed the benefits of art-related activity for mental health. Making art can provide a sense of well-being linked to the fact that the brain enters what is known as a “flow state”: the capacity to focus on the present moment and shed most worries. However, artistic creation can also lead to stress or discouragement if people feel pressured to produce something deemed "perfect." Even well-intentioned comments and appreciation can inadvertently induce feelings of insecurity or pressure to please.
The Luxembourgish Association of Qualified Art Therapists (ALAtD) was founded on October 13, 2008, with the mission of advocating for the recognition by the government of art therapy as a qualified, cohesive, and ethically bound profession. Additionally, the ALAtD provides information to the public and collaborates with European counterparts to promote the advancement of art therapy.
A list of qualified art therapists working in private practice can be found on the ALAtD website: https://www.alatd.lu/

❓Where do you work?
💬 Hôpital Kirchberg - Adult Psychiatry Service
❓Which target group do you work with?
💬I work with adult patients aged 18 and over with all kinds of psychiatric diagnoses.
❓With what objective?
💬Due to the diversity of the problems we treat, the goals vary greatly from individual to individual, but on the whole, one can say that in an acute crisis, the aim is always to achieve psychological stabilization.
❓A special sense of achievement?
💬There are many examples, but just a few days ago a patient (who was quite experienced in therapy) told me that through art therapy she had learned and understood many things that had not been clear to her before, and that this showed her that art therapy was useful and meaningful.

❓Where do you work?
💬I work in the youth psychiatric unit at Hôpitaux Robert Schuman (acute care unit, day clinic, and therapy unit).
❓Which target group do you work with?
💬I work with adolescents with psychiatric illnesses such as adjustment disorders, incipient psychoses, affective disorders, addictions, eating disorders (anorexia, bulimia, obesity, etc.), attention deficit disorder with or without hyperactivity (ADD/ADHD) or post-traumatic stress disorder.
❓With what objective?
💬Above all, it's about meeting the young person where they are. Depending on the problem/diagnosis, very different goals are formulated. These range from stabilization during the acute phase to fostering personal resources, regulating emotions, learning skills, and strengthening self-esteem and self-image.
Above all, patients should be able to express themselves freely in a protected therapeutic setting, using a wide variety of materials.
❓A special sense of achievement?
💬It's always nice to receive feedback from patients describing the feeling of "being a child again." Patients often say that they feel joy again and have found something through art therapy with which they can freely express their feelings or inner images.
Art therapy is generally very well received by young people, and is often even called their “favorite therapy.”

❓Où travailles-tu et avec quel setting?
💬 I work in my cabinet, in libéral, essential in individual séances.
❓Avec source population cible travailles-tu?
💬 It works with children for 3 years, with adolescents and adults.
❓What are their objectives?
💬 In all premier lieu, I have the advantage of establishing a relationship of confiance and a free therapeutic space and protection, in order to accumulate the person who says it, in all its singularity and with all the amène, without jugement.
💬 I spend a lot of time with a woman who has an accompaniment and who has debuted in a completely insatisfactory way with her paintings, which will not arrive until the image is reproduced in a precise and parfaite manner that is available in person.
